eventually the project exceeded the planting target of 9,000 ha. By December 2003,
approximately Lao Kip 58 billion (US$7.15 million) had been lent to onward clients;
with the final borrower profile including 2,496 smallholder families, 166 individual
entrepreneurs and 10 plantation enterprises. According to NAFES, by the project
closing date of 2003, some 12,940 ha had been planted with fast growing tree species,
largely eucalyptus. Despite some delays and challenges, it appeared that the project
was broadly on track to establishing a viable plantation sector in Laos and a support-
