does classic comfort food with clean ingredients, served in an old-style counter-
service setting. It's been slinging meat since 1949 and looks like it. Eating here is
a nice break from the balsamic vinegar and goat cheese served seemingly every-
where else. Burgers go from $6 to $9, fries and rings are $4 but cooked with care.
There are a few non-greasy choices such as a rare seared ahi burger ($14) and a
few chicken sandwiches. Don't skip the milkshakes, served with both spoon and
straw, since they're something it's known for. The menu and prices are identical
here to the Ferry Building. Beware if it's cold or rainy, because every seat is out-
doors and not every one is sheltered. A third branch, pressed from the same mold,
opened in early 2008 at the Oxbow Market in central Napa (p. 223).
$-$$$ Situated in a former bank, Ristorante Allegria (1026 1st St., Napa;
% 707/254-8006; www.ristoranteallegria.com; Mon-Sat 11:30am-2:30pm and
5-10pm, Sun 5-10pm; AE, MC, V) does steady Northern Italian standards for not
too much money: antipasti for $8 to $12, salads around $8, six pasta selections
for around $16 (like the wild mushroom ravioli), and a list of grilled meats and
salmons done well, for $17 to $28. The space is stylish without being hokey.
Spectacular? No. But it provides a dignified, affordable meal at the end of a long
day of moving around.
