simple dining area is nothing flashy, and, as a bonus, the tables in front get a
mountain view through the windows. Choose from among eight pasta sauces for
four different pastas, get a sandwich for $7 to $9, or grab a salad for $4.50 to $7.
Make sure to take stock of the daily special, which includes Northern
Italian-influenced meals such as egg and leek frittata on focaccia. Local beers,
many with names like racehorses (Pliny the Elder, Damnation) are also poured for
about $4.50 each. Even better for picnickers, everything is available for takeout.
If you decide to dine here, know that you might make some new friends: The
clientele is local and friendly all the way. Just make sure to pronounce the name
correctly—it's as in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, uncomfortably close to swearing, but
the prices are certainly dignified and the food is very good. In busy seasons, the
closing time may be extended to accommodate the crowds. This family runs a
nice place.
$$ I've been to a number of Thai places on the road, and I never expect much, but
I'm happy to report that Rin's Thai 55 (139 E. Napa St., Sonoma; % 707/
938-1462; www.rinsthai.com; Sun-Thurs 11:30am-9pm, Fri-Sat 11:30am-9:30pm;
MC, V) is pretty terrific. The menu offers all the standards ($9-$12), but extremely
well done, and with special attention to the level of spiciness that the guest prefers.
