The enrichment of children is a particular focus, so families comprise a good
chunk of the patronage. There are lots of extracurricular kids' programs (as sim-
ple as temporary tattooing and as thrilling as snake encounters) and talks on the
docket, too, so be sure to ask about special events.
Lectures, which go down several times a month for $19 a seat, are also well
programmed, with plenty of famous authors (Michael Pollan and Bill McKibben
both appeared in early 2008) and scientists bringing their findings in plainspoken
English to the public. Inquire about feeding times, usually in the middle of the
day, because that's when animals tend to be most active. The new opening hours
had not been set at press time, but the prior incarnation was open 10am to 5pm
daily, so expect something similar. If you're thinking of combining with a visit to
the de Young and to the Haight, which are both within walking distance, don't
come on a Monday, when the de Young is closed. Also, in the past, this museum
was part of the CityPass booklet, so check to see if it's back on the roster.
The haughtiest museum in town, and more a showplace for San Francisco soci-
ety than for the best in art, is probably the de Young 5 (Golden Gate Park, 50
