Getting to Havana Cheaply
Direct Flights
Despite being the capital city of Cuba, there are not that many airlines which offer
direct, international flights to Havana. From some cities, flights might only be
offered once or twice per week, often at odd hours of the day or night. Further-
more, most of the airlines which service Havana do not offer any discount flight op-
tions. If you are able to get a suitable direct flight to Havana, at an agreeable price,
you should definitely reserve it. But, if the prices just seem too high, do not lose
hope; there is another option.
Fly to Varadero
As mentioned before, Varadero is a massive resort town located just 2 hours away
from Havana. Varadero has an international airport which is serviced by hundreds
of airlines. International flights to Varadero are not only much more common than
those going to Havana, but they are usually considerably cheaper, too. Sometimes
the savings can amount to 50%. If you want to visit Havana but are looking for the
most budget friendly options, you should definitely consider booking a cheap flight
to Varadero. The Varadero airport is located just 130 km away from downtown
Havana, and there are many cheap options to get you from the Varadero airport
directly to Havana.
Varadero Airport to Havana by Bus
If you are landing at the Varadero airport and planning to go directly to Havana,
you can take the Viazul bus directly from the airport . The Viazul bus going from
Varadero to Havana departs 4 times per day and travels from the town of Varadero
all the way to Havana. On every trip, the bus stops to pick up and drop off passen-
gers at the Varadero airport. The bus stops directly in front of the departures area
of the airport. Once you land in Varadero and get out of the airport terminal, simply
turn left and walk about 10 meters. You will be standing in front of the Departures
terminal. The Viazul bus will arrive at this location according to the schedule indic-
ated below.
Note: There is no terminal and there is no Viazul signage. But simply stay in this
location, and rest assured that the bus will come. There are usually other foreign-
ers waiting in this area too, all for the Viazul bus.
The Viazul bus is white, with a large Viazul logo printed on the side. It is difficult to
miss. When the bus comes, simply ask the driver if you can buy a ticket to ride to
Havana. The fare is 10 CUC. Space is limited, but usually sufficient. The bus usu-
ally does not wait around very long, so be sure to have all your baggage in order
and your money in hand.
