Leaving Cuba
All foreigners must pay a 25 CUC exit tax to leave the country. This fee is waived
for children under the age of 2 years old. After checking in at the airport, you will
be instructed to go to the “Exit Tax” window to pay the fee.
Always remember to keep 25 CUC on reserve so that you can pay this fee. It is
common to see tourists who have no money left at the end of their trip trying to
borrow money from other foreigners at the airport to cover the exit tax. Obviously,
this situation should be avoided.
All airports have currency exchange booths, so you can always exchange your for-
eign currency for the required 25 CUC. Some airports also have ATM's or credit
card processing facilities which enable you to extract cash. As mentioned before,
electronic payments and withdrawals should be considered only as a last resort, as
these services are often non-operational.
