Education
Education is considered a right in Cuba and is provided free to all citizens. Primary
school and high school are compulsory. After high school, students can continue
their education in a college setting or learn a trade. In both cases, they can after-
wards continue their education in a university at no cost. University usually lasts 5
years.
Continuing education courses are also offered to citizens after they have com-
pleted their formal educations. These range from language courses to professional
certifications and trade schools. These courses are usually completely free or
offered at only a nominal cost.
Interesting Fact: After graduating from university, most students are offered gov-
ernment jobs in their field of study. They are expected to work at these jobs for at
least 2 years. This period is called Servicio Social (Social Service). After complet-
ing this time, they are free to change profession, work independently or go back to
school.
