In-Depth Information
This is not, as you might suppose, something you eat as a fruit. Botanically speaking,
it's a fruit because it contains seeds, but your taste buds will consider it a vegetable.
It's more closely related to gourds than to our familiar cantaloupes, honeydews, and
other melons.
Barely known in the United States, bitter melon is grown in both North and South
America as an ornamental vine. Its edible qualities may come as a surprise to many a
gardener who has looked at but not eaten its attractive foliage and strange fruits. It is
also known as bitter gourd, balsam pear, and kerala .
