Appearance
Chinese pumpkins don't look like the pumpkins common in North America; they come
in all shapes and various colors. The rind may be dark green, orange, brown, or almost
gray, with or without stripes, and often deeply ridged. The flesh varies in color from
orange to yellow and is usually very sweet. Some varieties are quite warty; all are very
decorative and attractive enough to include in autumnal table decorations. Most have
rather large sprawling vines and require more space than summer squash. They will
climb on anything and can be sown among corn or up a fence or trellis.
