Perhaps you've grown or eaten “burpless” cucumbers, a type with smaller-than-av-
erage seeds that is more digestible than the larger-seeded types. Sometimes these are
described as less bitter. There's nothing new about the burpless cucumber; it's simply
the type that's popular in Asia. It is sometimes also called Chinese cucumber or long
cucumber.
Appearance
Asian cucumber plants look exactly like any other cucumbers. The vines, flowers, and
leaves look so much alike that you need markers to tell them apart. The fruits, however,
are noticeably different almost as soon as they begin to form. Characteristically, most
