Several different species are called Egyptian lotus or sacred lotus, all represented in
Egyptian art and architecture from earliest times. The Egyptian lotus
(Nymphaea lotus)
is actually a water lily and looks different from the Chinese or sacred lotus
(Nelumbo
nucifera).
