In-Depth Information
closely related to common chives, but they're as different as they can be. The flavor is
garlic instead of onion, the flowers white instead of lavender.
The individual bulbs are large enough to be useful and give rise to another alternate
name, Chinese leek. This herb is also popular in Japan, where it is known as nira. Garlic
chives, sometimes called Chinese chives, can't be purchased in the average supermar-
ket. You must grow them if you want to have them, and nothing could be easier. They're
a very useful and beautiful herb — indoors and out — and you'll become very fond of
them.
