In-Depth Information
Appearance
The leaves of garlic are narrow but flat and solid (not hollow like chives). Plants grow
to about 18 inches tall. A flower stem rises up along with the leaves, and the pinkish
lavender flower cluster opens from a papery sheath that never fully parts as with other
alliums.
How to Grow
Getting started. Plant garlic cloves in place outdoors in late fall (about the time of your
first frost date, or even later). You can plant garlic in early spring, but you'll get smaller
cloves. The larger the clove you plant, the better the crop.
Planting. Separate garlic bulbs into individual cloves, and plant them ½ inches deep,
about 6 inches apart and in rows at least a foot apart. (Space elephant garlic cloves 7
