all'Adige) in 1951 and then propagated in 1957
to another vineyard near Pozza along with
those incroci that had most impressed the
researchers (such as Rebo and Gosen). It has
medium-sized bunches and berries: the latter
are slightly oval. It ripens early and is consid-
ered extremely promising since it accumulates
sugar with greater ease than does Rebo while
maintaining more than adequate total acidity
levels. As it's not very sensitive to botrytis, a
role in the making of air-dried wines has also
been postulated. It can be used in IGT blends
such as Delle Venezie, Vallagarina, and Vigneti
delle Dolomiti. Recently researchers have also
found that Sennen has adapted very well to the
much warmer Sicilian climate around Palermo
(Sparacio, Prinzivalli, Genna, Sparla, Capraro,
Melia, and Verzera 2010). I have not tasted any
of the wines yet: the dry wines are said to have
early accessibility but also the capacity to age
fi ve or six years. It is generally believed that
Sennen is best used to make lighter-bodied
wines of early appeal, while Gosen, another
incrocio by Rigotti, can be used to make agewor-
thy, structured wines.
San Martino
where it's found: Piedmont. national reg-
istry code number: 280. color: red.
Also known as Incrocio Dalmasso 7/21, San
Martino is a Chatus × Dolcetto crossing, like
Passau and Valentino Nero. It grows in Pied-
mont but I have no fi rsthand knowledge of any
varietal wines being made.
San Michele
where it's found: Piedmont. national reg-
istry code number: 288. color: red.
Also known as Incrocio Dalmasso 15/34,
San Michele is another Chatus × Barbera cross-
ing, like Albarossa, Cornarea, Nebbiera, and
Soperga. It also grows in Piedmont but I have
never tasted or even heard of any varietal wines
being for sale.
Sennen
Soperga
where it's found: Trentino. national regis-
try code number: 368. color: red.
Originally known as Incrocio Rigotti 107-2,
this was originally thought to be a crossing of
Merlot and Marzemino. Modern microsatellite
analysis has shown this to be a Merlot × Terol-
dego crossing instead; somehow the Marze-
mino and Teroldego accessions were mixed up
and so Teroldego was used instead. The variety
was renamed Sennen in honor of Rebo Rigotti's
brother, named Sennen (as Incrocio Rigotti
107-2, Sennen is generally referred to as Rebo's
“brother” grapevine, as Rebo was Incrocio
Rigotti 107-3). According to Roncador, Malos-
sini, Grando, Mattivi, Nicolini, and Versini
(2002), Sennen was initially planted in the
main experimental vineyard of the Fondazione
Mach (then the Istituto Agrario San Michele
where it's found: Piedmont. national reg-
istry code number: 292. color: red.
Also known as Incrocio Dalmasso IV/31 or
Superga, Soperga is another Chatus × Barbera
crossing, like Albarossa, Cornarea, Nebbiera,
and San Michele. It also grows in Piedmont but
I have never tasted or even heard of any varietal
wines being for sale.
Valentino Nero
where it's found: Piedmont. national reg-
istry code number: 295. color: red.
Also known as Incrocio Dalmasso 16/8, Val-
entino Nero is a Chatus × Dolcetto crossing,
like Passau and San Martino. It grows in Pied-
mont but I have no fi rsthand knowledge of any
varietal wines being made.
