wines to try: Alberto Lusignani*** and

Goldtraminer
where it's found: Trentino. national regis-
try code number: 368. color: white.
A Trebbiano Toscano × Gewürztraminer
crossing obtained by Rebo Rigotti in 1947 and
originally listed as Incrocio Rigotti 84-11.
Unfortunately many in Italy refer to this as a
Trebbiano Toscano × Traminer crossing, but
this is incorrect as it is Gewürztraminer, a
much more aromatic variety, that was used.
The bunch is medium-small and loosely
packed, while the berries are medium-sized;
both are bigger than those of Gewürztraminer.
There is one clone available: ISMA-AVIT 3001.
This crossing's name was changed to Goldtra-
miner due to the intense color of its berries and
their characteristic aroma (Roncador, Malos-
sini, Grando, Mattivi, Nicolini, and Versini
2002). It was fi rst planted in an experimental
vineyard of the Fondazione Mach (then called
Istituto Agario di San Michele all'Adige) in
1951 alongside three hundred different cross-
ings and then selected from these and planted
in a vineyard near Becchetti in 1951, and again
in a vineyard of the Fondazione De Bellar in
1971.
Roncador, Malossini, Grando, Mattivi, Nico-
lini, and Versini found that Goldtraminer rip-
ens in late September and is an ideal grape to
try late-harvest or air-dried wines with, thanks
to thick berry skins that make it resistant both
to cold weather and to botrytis. The wine has
much higher concentrations of terpenes such
as citronellol and geraniol than does Gewürz-
traminer, so comes across smelling and tasting
like an aromatic fruit bomb when late har-
vested. It can be included in IGT blends such as
Delle Venezie, Vallagarina, and Vigneti delle
Dolomiti.
Fedit 51
where it's found: Veneto, Emilia-Romagna,
Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio. national regis-
try code number: 276. color: white.
Fedit 51 is a crossing of Malvasia Bianca
Lunga Toscana and Garganega obtained by the
Federazione Italiana dei Consorzi Agrari at the
Vivaio di Carrara San Giorgio in 1951 (hence the
name, “Fed” + “It” + 51). The variety has a large,
long, pyramidal bunch with medium-sized,
round, pinkish-yellow berries. All its phenologi-
cal phases fall late and it is not particularly vig-
orous when grown on hillsides, but wine quality
is far superior to that of grapes grown in the
fl atlands. It is grown mainly in Veneto (Padua
and Vicenza), in Emilia-Romagna (Forlì, Ces-
ena, Bologna, and Ravenna), and sporadically
in Lazio and Abruzzo.
wines to try: Emilia-Romagna's excellent
Tenuta Pederzana*** (Rioforeste Raffinata
Passione, a sweet wine).
Fubiano
where it's found: Piedmont. national reg-
istry code number: 275. color: white.
A white grape variety obtained by Dalmasso
in 1936 by crossing Furmint with Trebbiano
Toscano. It has a medium-sized, compact grape
bunch, pyramidal in shape, with one wing and
small, thick-skinned, straw-yellow berries. It is
used to make a good sparkling wine not unlike
Prosecco. I think Fubiano is an interesting vari-
ety and one that could have a future.
wines to try: Piedmont's Tenuta Cannona**,
which is the experimental viticulture and wine-
making research station of the regional Pied-
montese government (Centro Sperimentale
Vitivinicolo della Regione Piemonte), where a
great deal of experimentation has been per-
formed over the years with this and many other
crossings.
wines to try: Cantina Toblino*** (Gold-
traminer, a very good example of an air-dried,
luscious, and intensely aromatic wine that will
remind you of peach, mango, saffron, and
sweet spices).
