SAMARKAND TODAY
TRADITIONAL HANDICRAFTS OF SAMARKAND
Samarkand has been the most important city of the Silk Road for many
centuries. Thus handmade crafts have very long roots planted deep in its
history. Reaching back as far as before Christ; Mawarannahr's many tribes
and nations have demonstrated their talents in different crafts making Sa-
markand the most precious center for arts and trade in the entire world.
The Turkish tribe of Oghuz discovered and perfected the art of ceramics,
Sogdians were masters of gold and silver works, Taciks were master of
textiles. Many art works of the region are exhibited in prestigious muse-
ums all over the world. Today traditional handmade crafts still survive and
are produced. A good example for crafts of our times would be “Suzanis”
blankets. Suzanies are produced by colorful silk threads embroidered on
cotton fabric. These works' value is judged by the amount of embroidery
and colors and complexity of the motifs (Fig. 15).
