Merv has been the center for ceramics from the beginning and became
a tile production center since the 9th century. In the Seljuk period, the
jugs made from mold, decorated with human, bird, legendary animal and
plant patterns, have taken their place among Merv ceramics (Figs. 20 and
21). In addition, the metal work, especially gold and sliver, reached very
advanced levels (Esin, 1976).
