Ak Sheikh Baba Bastion, being the oldest building in the city, is at the
highest point in Kunya Ark. It is named after a sufi who is claimed to lead
a life of seclusion here in the 14th century. The two story building, which
survived until today, has served as a watch tower and gun-powder arse-
nal. The blue-white tiles, decorating the inner side of the summer mosque
(1838) in Kunya Ark, were made by the local tile makers, Ibadullah and
Abdullah Jin, whose tiles also decorated the Tash Hauli and Pakhlavan
Mahmoud tomb.
TASH HAULI PALACE
In this new center, of which its construction was initiated by Abdullah
Kulu Han (1825-1842) in 1830 as the city center was being moved to-
wards east and of which construction has lasted for 8 years, a big palace
was built with 163 rooms and 3 large courtyards. It has the appearance
