In-Depth Information
Clearly, communication is one of the most powerful leadership tools at all
levels. Communicating your vision and beliefs to engage others and inspire them
to believe in them will lead to acceptance as a leader. Since most of us will not
lead as dictators, but as consensual leaders, this requires a good bit of discussion
and persuasion. This is why communication skills are so important. Whether it
is making a speech to a large audience, talking informally to your supporters, or
just sending an email, how you say it is as important as what you say.
It is important to realize that although your vision may be clear to you, and
your plan of action has been well thought-out, if others do not understand what
you plan to accomplish, then you have not achieved your first test - proper com-
munication. Your communication skills are one of the most potent weapons you
can use to fight for your cause.
I hope that even with all the issues I have raised throughout this chapter you
are not afraid to learn what it takes to overcome those issues. Enroll in public
speaking courses if you are afraid to address crowds. Make it a point to express
your convictions during informal gatherings and meetings in a gentle, but firm
way. While it's good to communicate with passion, people should remember
what you have said rather than how you said it. Remember, if you can't com-
municate, how will people know who you are and what you're fighting for? If
they do not know your cause or you, why would they support you?
Obviously, the way you communicate will be a function of the purpose of
the message, size of the audience, and forum. Understanding how to be effec-
tive at communicating in various environments will go a long way in ensuring
a broad understanding of you, your vision, and leadership capabilities. Finally,
there will also be times when you need to communicate in difficult situations
without letting your emotions get in the way. You'll be in situations where you
feel like you weren't treated fairly, and being able to communicate in a way that
allows you to share and receive information from individuals is crucial.
Ability to Stand Up for Yourself
Since 1977, when the women of the U.S. House of Representatives formed themselves into
a women's caucus, these legislators have been the driving force behind major legislation
benefiting women and their families. Many of these issues were complex and controversial,
and progress could not have been achieved without a sustained effort, especially by the
women members of the House, who have been willing to give the problems continuing
priority. [23]
It is just as important to become a leader as it is to remain one amidst all adversi-
ties and criticisms. While we are leaders for the cause and not ourselves, as the
representative for the cause we must be willing to stand up for ourselves. All
of us have at some time faced the barbs, the criticisms, and the attempts to “cut
us down to size.” As a leader it is doubly important that you learn to stand up
straight, and fight for yourself and the cause or group you are leading. Standing
