In-Depth Information
Yes, your team needs a leader, but the leader needs a team just as much, or
more than they need you. Your strength is the strength of your team, and, as an
engaged leader, you can infuse this strength or power into your team. However,
this can't be done from the outside. To do this, we have to learn to be in two
places at the same time - in front and in the middle. In front, because that's
where we stand as leaders; in the middle, because that is the heart of our team
and the “team” is how we get things done!
Remember that, although they are a team working together for the same
objective, the team is made up of individuals, all of whom have their different
traits, abilities, and emotions. Get to know them personally. Let them relate to
you on a one-to-one basis; do not be aloof on the hilltop, watching others while
they work. Of course, if you have a large team, getting to know each person inti-
mately will not be possible. This is additional motivation to develop others as
leaders. Empower them to represent the vision and develop your team through
them by focusing on the vision. The fact that you encourage others to take up
leadership roles will boost the morale of your team and motivate them to do
more for the cause, knowing that their efforts will be recognized.
Communication Skills
Communication skills are sometimes less than exceptional for STEM profes-
sionals, as we have spent much of our education and career focused on the tech-
nical elements of our environment. However, as leaders it is imperative that our
communication skills be strong. This is not to say you must be a great orator, but
we must be able to decisively and convincingly share our thoughts, perspectives,
and concerns.
If you can dream it you can do it
Walt Disney
The short yet powerful quote “If you can dream it, you can do it” [5] by
visionary Walt Disney has been a constant source of inspiration for at least three
generations. As a resident of central Florida, the home of the Walt Disney World
Resorts, I am continually amazed, impressed, and inspired by the incredible
leadership and vision of founder Walt Disney. The effect of this leadership has
lasted and is being permeated on a global level with resorts in Paris, Tokyo, and
other places throughout the world.
However, believing in one's dreams alone is not enough. Walt Disney was
not just a dreamer - he was clearly a doer as well as a consistent communi-
cator about the passion he had for his vision. Many people have held intoxi-
cating visions and honorable intentions; however, in the absence of effective
communication none of these visions will be realized. Leadership requires
the communication of a compelling image for the goal state, and ideally the
communication of this idea should induce enthusiasm, inspiration, and com-
mitment in the team or followers.
