music is sold and distributed. Business model innovation often involves a com-
pany shedding “non core” business functions and reconfiguring its value chain.
It emphasizes external collaboration and partnerships. Proctor & Gamble, as
well as Eli Lily, are contemporary examples of companies that employ open,
collaborative innovation models.
Personal Innovation
Personal innovation tailors career focus, personal capabilities, skills, and rela-
tionships to meet current and emerging needs in a given area of opportunity
( Figure 2.1 ). Individuals who are successful at this know themselves, know the
career landscape, and know how to take action [11] .
To excel in personal innovation the following process can be applied and
tailored to address our goals of “recreating” ourselves or personal innovation.
1. Determine your true passion:
a. What ideas get you excited?
b. What are the things you do that you lose track of time and can work on
for hours without noticing the time passing?
c. If there were no constraints, barriers, or limitations what would you
“see” yourself doing in your ultimate career?
