including economic communication via cell phone, e-mail, and resources such
as Skype. To take advantage of global resources to support innovation we must
apply these Internet and communication resources used for social interaction
with the same intensity toward the attainment of our innovation goals.
Now the technology resources are identified, it's important for us to deter-
mine the “human resources” needed to support innovation. When it comes to
innovating in your career, you need a trusted individual to act as your innovation
soundboard and you need a support team. If you are in a position where you do
not have this type of support, don't despair. Given the degree of connectivity in
today's society, you can create a virtual team to support your innovation process
in almost any environment. You can build that support and create your team.
Remember, innovation is a team sport!
PERSONAL INNOVATION VS ORGANIZATIONAL
INNOVATION
Praveen Gupta, author of Business Innovation in the 21 st Century [7] , has found
a way to quantify innovation using the following equation:
Innovationvalue = (resources)(speedofthought)
The speed of thought is described by the following equation:
Speedofthought = (function)(knowledge,play,imagination)
Gupta then created a new unit called Einstein ( Ei ), to represent the units
of the innovation value. This new unit is given the maximum value of “1.”
Therefore, Innovation value (Ei) is equal to the resources (commitment) times
a function of knowledge, play, and imagination (KPI). This equation not only
identifies a numerical value but also sheds light on elements of innovation that
can be used to maximize the innovation value. Gupta writes, “the innovation can
be increased with more resources or faster generation and processing of ideas
[and] can be accelerated with better utilization of intellectual resources rather
than merely allocating more physical resources to innovation.”
Gupta uses Table 2.1 to demonstrate quantification of innovation [8] .
While it is not necessary to have a certain “Innovation Score” in order to
initiate and grow your innovative abilities, it is important to understand where
you are as innovator so that you can improve upon your skillset. This equation
for calculating innovation levels will certainly appeal to many STEM profes-
sionals but the more important thing to understand is the elements or factors
within the equation. Having access to resources, knowledge, an ability to exper-
iment, and imagination create a foundation to see innovation realized. So, do
not be overly concerned with the equation, instead understand that each of these
items is needed in various portions for an individual to be a consistent innovator.
