In-Depth Information
Knowing what resources we need, how to access them, and how to use them
is very valuable. For example, if you want to go back to school to pursue a
graduate degree because you recognize that everyone at the level you want to
achieve in the workplace has a master's degree, you need to understand the
resources you will require to accomplish this goal. Your assessment of resources
should include financial, relationships, equipment, time away from work, etc.,
so you can choose a program that is flexible to fit into your schedule. Then you
would see if necessary resources were available: maybe your organization will
reimburse you. Perhaps they have an on-site program or relationship with an
institution to offer online courses. Another financial resource might be a loan
attached to some level of volunteerism or community service upon completion
of your degree. You will need to look at different levels of graduate programs -
while you need an accredited program, you may not need to go to an Ivy League
school. From the standpoint of time, you may realize that you don't have time
to go to class every day but you're not disciplined enough to do all your work
from home via an online program. If this is the case, you can find an interactive
online degree program which allows you that level of interaction along with
some flexibility.
GOOD ASSOCIATION AND NETWORKING
The importance of having the right people in your inner circle cannot be empha-
sized enough for those hoping to attain great goals. We have discussed a number
of ways to obtain these relationships from Female Fusion, identifying mentors,
and relationships with individuals in our personal and professional networks.
The development of a personal accountability team can also be useful in moving
toward your goal at a healthy pace.
A personal accountability team is a group of individuals (at least two) that
you've shared your vision with and asked to hold you accountable. The chair-
man of your personal accountability team is YOU, thus your team will have a
minimum of three people. Keep a journal with a table that shows your goals
to share regularly with your accountability partner. Your accountability team
should consist of individuals locally and remotely who you trust to help you
achieve your goals. Social media resources such as Facebook can be extremely
valuable in facilitating interaction with your accountability team. Use Figure
8.3 below to develop your ideal Accountability Team.
Your accountability peer is a person with whom you will share your goals,
your plan, and your schedule to obtain those goals. You can have a digital
accountability partner - you can even make your smart phone an electronic
accountability partner! Have it send you reminders or ask for your status a week
to 10 days in advance.
To make sure those that you're asking to serve on your accountability team
understand just how important their support is to you, I recommend the use of
a formal invitation to serve as your accountability partner. Invitation is used
