MAKE THE DECISION
It is time to move beyond the beautiful dream and grand vision that rests in your
mind. The dream must move to the decision stage in order for you to start doing
rather than dreaming. The three primary focus areas you will need to consider in
the decision include your career vision, your personal vision (family life), and
the organization, company, or professional environment in which you expect
to attain your goals. If we fail to consider any of these areas in our decision
making, we will likely not have a comprehensive picture of the major factors
impacting the outcome of our goals. In Chapter 3 we discussed the reasons more
women do not lead or innovate, and these factors should be considered as you
make your decisions as it will help you understand the cultural, individual, and
organizational factors regarding your situation. In Chapter 5, we discussed a
plan to develop the leader in you with a career management plan and strategies
to manage adversity. At this point, the research (or process to do the research)
has been provided for you to gain the insight you need to make a good decision.
There is, however, one area that bears discussing with respect to the relation-
ship between you and your organization. Oftentimes, we will have a “relation-
ship” with our organization, as described by Weaver and Hill in the topic Smart
Women, Smart Moves [1] , that is not conducive to the attainment of the goals. It
is imperative that we be completely honest with ourselves about how our orga-
nization views and values us. Additionally, we must evaluate the commitment
that we have to the organization. Failure to do this can lead to “acceptance” by
