my daughter. These visions were a source of inspiration and encouragement
in the lowest periods of my life and they were the foundation that moved me
forward to the realization of my ambitions. Today, I still do the same thing in
considering the next phase of my career. My leadership model has been refined,
and, although motivation has changed, the process for getting there remains the
same: create a vision, a mission, and execute the plan!
A simple approach to begin your journey into leadership whether you decide
to subscribe to authentic or transformational leadership theories, or any other
theory is to prepare a vision and mission statement for your personal career
aspiration. This analysis helps to give you a better understanding of where your
strengths lie, where your interests are, the opportunities you are faced with,
and the threats which you must overcome to attain a particular goal. Try to be
as objective as possible about yourself. Within this analysis not only will you
understand your strengths and weaknesses, but you should also list your assets
(not just your financials!) and your liabilities. If you have some really good
friends whose opinion you value and trust, show them your list and ask for
their comments. Remember, it's not always the big things that tell you about

time will be well worth the effort in the long term. Upon development of your vision
you will likely see your attitude enhanced and the frequency of your frustration with
small matters in life may begin to be minimized. That is because, as I like to say,
your mind will be on “higher” things, specifically your life vision. A vision is about
a higher calling and vision-driven living is an exciting and impactful way to live.
Your vision statement should also cover the important areas of your life. It
is a written description of your future desired life as you see it in your mind.
There are no hard and fast rules about the “correct” format or length, although
the more detailed and specific your vision is, the more connected to you it will
