concentration in seawater pumped from a depth of 2m is shown in Fig. 3.20. Typical
concentrations of reactive silicate were less than 1µM. However, three instances of high
silicate were encountered. The first two, at 14:30 and 19:00, are probably due to the
upwelling of nutrient-rich water induced by the headlands at Santa Cruz and Pillar Pt.
The third, at 21:00 (note scale change), occurred when the ship entered the plume of
