In-Depth Information
“The problem with MDM is it's effectively all top down human curation,” comments
Sangani. “Our observation has been that's just not scalable. It never was scalable previously
… but it works even less now. If you think about the amount of data that's being generated,
that's one factor. But the data is also becoming more complicated. On top of that, there's
just very little in resources to manage the data. There has to be more people managing the
data, more people accessing and touching the data, to talk about it and describe it. But there
also have to be automated techniques in order to enable the people who do that manage-
ment work faster.”
“Big Data's fine,” writes Gigaom's Barb Darrow. “The right data, however, is a game
changer.” Here we are talking about refining, getting to, and leveraging that precise vertic-
al data set - that niche data set - which is Brad. That's the challenge. And that's the mis-
sion of data curation. Without the skills and tools to “go narrow” in our focus and pick just
the right information stream or information streams from the vast and continually flowing
data rivers, the entire ecosystem is useless for BI purposes. Thus arises that most vital task
called data curation.
