Things You Wish You Had Left Home
The only things I wish I'd left home are clothes that are heavier than long-sleeved cotton
shirts or light slacks. My sweatshirts are still sitting in the bottom of the suitcase two years
afterarrival, andwarmsockshavebecome collector'sitems. Nevertheless, theyaregoodto
have for trips to northern Vietnam or Laos where the temperatures actually do fall below 70
(or for when your blood thins so much that you want to wear a warm jacket, like the locals).
It's also not necessary to have formal clothing, since everything is ultra-casual. The only
time this may be necessary is if you're working in a corporate environment or intend to
spend time at Raffles or symphony concerts at the Intercontinental. Cambodian weddings
also provide an opportunity to don the heels and glittery tops (not so for men, who are ac-
ceptedincasualattire).Otherwise,casualtrousers,anicetop(orcollaredshirtformen),and
a good pair of sandals constitutes formal clothing.
