Educational Opportunities
There are a number of primary and secondary schools for expats which have good reputa-
tions.Sincetherearemanyforeignersmovingintothecountry,thedemandforqualityinter-
national education is starting to exceed supply, and some of the schools have waiting lists.
Education is extremely important to Cambodians, and anyone who can afford to is taking
classes to improve their station in life. Many of my Cambodian colleagues take classes in
English,marketing,orbusinessontheweekends.We'vespokenwithyoungwaiterswhoare
attending university at the same time as working in restaurants. One of our tuktuk drivers
takesEnglish,Korean,anddrivingclasseswhenhescrapestogetherenoughmoneytodoso.
While many schools use the word “international” in their name, it doesn't necessarily mean
anything (there's even one called the American Idol International School). There are three
real international schools in Phnom Penh: ISPP, iCAN, and Northbridge. iCAN is a British
international school which also follows the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). ISPP
follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, as does Northbridge.
