dining room, and a total paint job done on their place when they decided to renew for
three more years. It's helpful to have someone who speaks the language who can walk you
through the process.
The cost of a decent apartment ranges from $250 to $800 per month, depending on the
neighbourhood and the facilities. Serviced apartments are more expensive (generally start-
ing around $1,000/month) and usually include maid service, security, wifi, fitness rooms,
and gyms. There are a number of them scattered around the city and several, such as Bas-
sacGardenCityandJardinsduBassac,areenclosedcompoundswithsecuritygates,swim-
ming pools, tennis courts, squash courts, children's playgrounds, and fitness centres.
Apartments near the Russian Market, Tuol Sleng, and other places slightly out of the city
centretendtobecheaperandmostplacesusuallycomesparinglyfurnished(wehadtopur-
chase extra pieces to fill out the space since our landlords had a specific budget in mind).
Electricity is not usually included in the rent and foreigners are charged a higher rate than
Khmers-usuallybetween$25and$150/month,dependingonyouruseofairconditioning
and the size of your living space.
Cookinggascostsbetween$6and$25pertank,dependingonthesize.Thereisaone-time
charge for the bottle and gas is delivered free (and promptly) with just a phone call, even
on holidays. We once ran out of gas during a Khmer holiday and the delivery man showed
up at our door 20 minutes later with a fresh bottle on his shoulder.
