Holidays
Since Cambodia is a predominantly Buddhist country, many of the holidays are Buddhist
celebrations based on lunar calendars, so the dates change from year to year.
It does, however, celebrate three new years: the International New Year on January 1,
Chinese New Year later in January or early February, and Khmer New Year in April. Many
of the holiday dates remain the same (or close to the same) and below are those for 2013
(those with an asterisk are changeable dates).
Holidays for 2013:
New Year's Day - 1 Jan
Victory over Genocide Day - 7 Jan
*Chinese New Year - 23 Jan
*Meak Bochea Day (A day for the veneration of Buddha and his teachings) - 27 Feb
International Women's Day - 8 March
*Khmer New Year - 13-16 April
International Labour Day - 1 May
*Royal Ploughing Ceremony (The start of ploughing season) - 28 May
