open-necked shirts in most environments.
Insmallvillages,however,youmaywanttocoverupabitmore,sinceCambodianvillagers
often don't have much exposure to westerners. You'll be stared at, no matter what you
wear, so it is advisable to be a little more conservative and leave the tank top behind (or
cover it with a short-sleeved top).
At the seaside or around a pool, you'll never see a Cambodian woman in a bathing suit.
Locals swim fully dressed, as it's considered improper to show flesh in public. As a west-
ern woman, you're quite accepted in your bikini - just don't wear it inside.
Also remember that Cambodian weather is extreme, so you'll want to use protection
against the sun in hot months (locals cover up in long sleeves, long trousers, hats, and
gloves) as well as prepare yourself for the deluge in rainy season. It's too hot to wear a
jacket or coat so you'll need a good umbrella, shoes you don't care much about, and one
of those tiny, cheap (about 25 cents) raincoats which look like pink, blue, or yellow plastic
bags with hoods and can be bought on street corners and most convenience stores.
