Cost Of Everyday Things
When you buy groceries from supermarkets, you'll find prices are generally less than what
youpayinthewesternworld,mysteriouslysowhenitcomestobrandnameslikeRitzcrack-
ers. We prefer to buy produce from local, outdoor markets as it costs less than half and
there's an abundance of freshly-grown and picked fruits and veggies. Make sure to wash
everything well before eating, though (tap water is fine to use for rinsing).
The main supermarkets include Pencil, Lucky, and Bayon in Phnom Penh; the prices below
reflect purchases made in these markets.
Loaf of bread: $1.20
Liter of milk: $2
Packet of breakfast cereal: $4.50 (brand Cornflakes); $2.45 (non brand)
1.5 liter bottle of water: 30 cents
One can of beer from supermarket: 45 cents
A beer from an expat-type bar: $1.50
