Drinking Water
It's always best to drink bottled or boiled water in Cambodia. Although water from the tap
is said to be fine, the piping and added chlorine make it not so fine. We spent our first year
boiling water before investing in a water filter, which is inexpensive and can be found in
various shops around the Central Market.
Alternately,youcanbuyawatercoolerwitharefillablefive-gallonjugandhavebottledwa-
ter delivered to your home. There are a number of companies around, such as Eurotech, Hi
Tech,andMotherthatprovidethisservice.Justlookaroundforbottlesinyourlocalgrocery
store,astheywillhaveaphonenumberonthemthatyoucancallfordelivery.Costis$4for
the initial bottle deposit and $1 for every five-gallon bottle delivered.
You'll also want to be careful about ice in local restaurants, particularly at street stalls or
in the villages. Ice is produced in large cubes which are delivered to outlets and shops and
you'll often see people hacking away with pickaxes at large slabs of ice in back alleys so
they can use it for cooling or pop it into your drink. Rule of thumb is if you get chunks of
