Food
Food is a focal point for most Cambodians. A typical greeting, after saying “ Sua s'day
(hello), is often “ Nyam baai howee ?” which means “Have you eaten?” - and the word for
eat (“ nyam baai”) literally translates into “eat rice,” showing the importance of that staple
dish in everyone's life.
For a population which is so tiny and slight, Cambodians manage to consume enormous
amounts of rice. A meal isn't a meal without it - for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are
social events and it's a wonderful experience (and honour) to be invited to the home of a
Cambodian to see how they eat and socialise.
