Toilets
Bathrooms in Cambodia are very different to those in the western world. While the expat
places (hotels, restaurants, cafes, etc) all have western-style toilets, many of the more local
establishments may not.
I always make sure to keep a few tissues in my pocket when I'm travelling, since buses usu-
allystopatplaceswithsquattoilets whichneverhavetoilet paper. Andmanyofthesmaller
hotels and eating places have less than desirable facilities. I've waded through mud patches
in the rain to get to outdoor toilets, as well as walked past chicken and pigs to reach a bath-
room.
Evenincities,you'llfindlocalrestaurantswithsimpletoilets,manyofwhichrequireyouto
throw tissue into a bin instead of down the toilet due to bad plumbing. Almost every bath-
room in Cambodia comes equipped with a spray hose which is a small nozzle attached to a
hosetothesideofthetoilet- usedasareplacementfortoiletpaper-andthe“flush”mech-
