16. East and West Village
Both East and West Village are neighborhoods in Manhattan. They each have their own
charms that help set them apart and establish the reasons that they are such desirable areas
to live in.
East Village
The East Village started to develop its own identity in the 1960s, when its affordable rent
became very attractive to musicians, artists, hippies and students alike. For more than a dec-
ade, it was home to a number of Beatniks (the name used to describe the people who em-
braced the 'Beat Generation' from the 1950s to mid-1960s), who gave the area its hip vibe.
Through the years, the East Village has developed into a community that is immensely di-
verse, offers artistic inspiration, and has a nightlife scene to rival any other in New York
