In-Depth Information
The design charts in Figs. 3-8 through 3-11 offer another simplified method for shear design. By entering the charts
with values of d and
V c for the member at the section under consideration, the required stirrup spacing
can be obtained by locating the first line above the point of intersection of d and
φ
V s = V u -
φ
V s . Values for spacing not shown
can be interpolated from the charts if desired. Also given in the ch arts the values for the minimum practical beam
widths b w that correspond to the maximum allowable for each given spacing s; any member
which has at least this minimum b w will be adequate to carry the maximum applied V u . Fig. 3-11 can also be used
to quickly determine if the dimensions of a given section are adequate: any member with an applied V u which is
less than the applicable V u(max) can carry this shear without having to increase the values of b w and/or d. Once the
adequacy of the cross-section has been verified, the stirrup spacing can be established by using Figs. 3-8 through
3-11. This spacing must then be checked for compliance with all maximum spacing criteria.
