Lepocinclis
Lepocinclis
is found in ponds and
small water bodies, often alongside other
euglenoids. Cells (10-20 μm wide, 25-
40 μm long) are circular in section, spher-
ical to spindle-shaped, sometimes with a
tapering tail. The pellicle is rigid with spi-
rally arranged striations on the surface.
Cells have numerous discoid chloroplasts,
an anterior eyespot, two annular-shaped
paramylum granules and a single long
flagellum (up to twice the length of the
cell). Euglenophyta. Plate XV.

Chromulina
Widespread in cleaner waters often
amongst vegetation, often in the neuston
or plankton. Cells (6-7 μm wide, 9-14 μm
long) are ovoid with one or two curved
plate-like chloroplasts, a leucosin body
located at the posterior end and a single
long flagellum. Chrysophyta. Plate XV.

Chrysochromulina
.This
is a member of the Haptophyta - unlike
Chromulina
which is a Chrysophyte.
Haptophytes usually have two flagella and
a haptonema (see Glossary).
Chrysochro-
mulina
cellsaresphericalwithtwochloro-
plasts. Widely distributed.

Chrysochromulina
. Single ovoid cell
with two equal flagella, a central long haptonema (h) and
parietal olive-green chloroplasts (c). Reproduced with
permission from R. Matthews. (b)
Rhodomonas
. Cells
appear oval in face view (A) and comma-shaped in side
view (B), with a distinct posterior hyaline tail (arrow).
Flagella not visible in this iodine-stained preparation.

Spermatozopsis
but no pyrenoids. Quite widely distributed
although never abundant - in small ponds,
nutrient-rich pools, puddles or slow flow-
ing waters. Chlorophyta. Plate XV.
Only one species found,
Spermatozop-
sis exsultans.
Cells (7-12 μm long, 3-
4 μm wide) are crescent-shaped or curved,
sometimes S-shaped. Cells have four flag-
ella, a parietal chloroplast, an eyespot

catedanteriorend..................
