Figure 10. SO-Grid graphical interface: comparison of overall entropy values obtained when the number
of classes is set to 3, 5 and 7
the discussed protocols. This portal is specifi-
cally designed to carry out “parameter sweep”
analysis, since a user can graphically compare
the results of different simulations executed in
previous sessions.
The exploitation of bio-inspired algorithms in
distributed systems surely needs more analysis
and evaluation in future years. An important
issue is that results are always obtained empiri-
cally and tuned by experience: a very important
step forward would be the construction of an
analytical model that relates the operations of
simple agents to the overall results obtained by
their collective work.
A set of research avenues could also be ex-
plored to enhance the efficiency of the discussed
protocols. For example, in a future version pro-
posed in this chapter, agents could replicate and
disseminate descriptors on the basis of the quality
of service (QoS) of the corresponding resources.
If the descriptors pertaining to high quality and
recently updated resources were disseminated
more rapidly than other descriptors, the users
would be likely given access to more useful and
appropriate resources.
Other improvements could be obtained by
better driving the movements of agents: for ex-
ample, an agent that has reached an accumulation
region on the Grid could give other agents this
information so as to make their work more effec-
tive. This kind of interaction could be inspired
by another class of bio-inspired mechanisms,
which try to emulate the movements of birds in
a flock. Another possible enhancement could be
obtained by reorganizing the P2P overlay of Grid
hosts according to the “small-world” paradigm
(Kleinberg, 2000). A small number of short dis-
tance P2P connections should be substituted by
long-distance connections, that would directly link
hosts located in distant regions of the Grids. It is
