For example, consider the open-source GPS shield developed by Adafruit Industries shown
in Figure 4.2 . This shield supports any of the four most popular GPS modules and stores
data on a standard DOS-formated SD lash memory card. For scientists doing ield work (e.g.
environmental scientists tracking water quality in the Great Lakes) after collecting the data,
they plug it into their computer and the plain text files are ready for importing into GRASS 11 ,
Google Earth 12 , GPSvisualizer 13 , or any other form of Geographic Information System (GIS)
software or a spreadsheet. The pins indicated in Figure 4.2(b) are required for the SD card. The
GPS module also requires pins connected, but they can be jumpered to any of the spare Ar-
duino pins. Up to eight other pins may be required depending on whether you implement SD
card detection, status indication, and other features. 14
