while crossing the highways. Drainage of wetlands and pollution can also pose threats to local popula-
tions. On the brighter side, construction of many farm and recreational ponds has created new habitat
for newts and other amphibians, which should help to ensure the future of these interesting and enjoy-
able little creatures.
