the minimum wage (SMIC) which is currently

The spouse of a French citizen has to wait three years for

Anglophone Embassies
Foreign embassies are most helpful to their citizens during
times of crisis. They replace lost passports and help in medical
or legal emergencies by making referrals to appropriate
doctors, dentists or lawyers. They do not, however, help
people to get out of jail. In all emergencies, embassies act
as a liaison between the family at home and the person in
France. It's a good idea to carry the telephone number of
your embassy in your wallet.
For non-emergencies, embassies renew passports; record
births, marriages and deaths; notarise documents and provide
advice on matters such as absentee voting and the filing of
taxes. Sometimes they offer information on local services,
including lists of English-speaking doctors and attorneys,
translators and international schools. Some have community
liaison offices (of varying responsiveness). Embassies serving
the greatest number of residents in Paris provide the most
information, but basic services are the same.
Some countries allow their citizens to register their address
in Paris, making it easier to replace lost passports and to be
contacted in case of emergency. Inquire at your embassy.
Most embassies are open for consular affairs in the mornings
only; find out when your embassy is open before going and
bring your passport to be allowed in. On the national holidays
of both France and of your own country, the embassy will no
doubt be closed. See ' Ambassades, Consulats ' in the Yellow
Pages .
