WORSHIP IN PARIS
Since the 6th century, the history of Paris has been intertwined
with Christianity (see Chapter Two). However, for the last 100
years, there has been an official separation of church and state
in France. Although some 90 per cent of the population claims
Catholicism as its religion, it is said that only about 12 per cent
are active worshippers. In addition to the 200 Catholic churches
found in Paris, there are opportunities for worship in just
about whichever denomination and religion you choose—and
in the major languages of the world. See Eglises or Cultes in
the Yellow Pages . For more English-language churches, check
the Saturday edition of the International Herald Tribune under
'Religious Services'.
