GLOSSARY
Even if you don't speak a word of French, you should have
no trouble finding your way in Paris if you stay on the tourist
track. Nonetheless, it's still a good idea to have a basic
vocabulary, for the French appreciate visitors who try to
speak their language—it is their country, after all.
All this said, if you don't have any French in your
repertoire, the one most efficient sentence you might
consider learning is “ Pardonnez-moi monsieur ( madame ),
parlez-vous anglais ?” which means “Excuse me sir (ma'am),
do you speak English?” And if you do speak some French,
but have diffi culty understanding someone, you can always
say, with an apologetic little smile, “ Parlez lentement, s'il-vous-
plaît ”, and most people will oblige by speaking slowly.
If you are here to stay for while, however, you should learn
at least enough French to get by. It will be helpful in daily
life, no matter how short your stay. It's also fun to be able
to converse with others, even if you see them wince from
time to time at your mistakes. Take some lessons to get you
started. Most schools offer short-term courses, which can
be fun as well as instructive. See Chapter Eight for language
schools and for some hints on French pronunciation.
