In-Depth Information
requires the hostess to divert her attention from the
dinner. For instance, don't bring flowers for which she
might first have to find a vase and then have to arrange.
Do take only as much as you will eat if platters are passed
and you are to serve yourself. It is a terrible gaffe to take
or ask for more than you can eat.
Do take some more if you are offered seconds and you are
still hungry, but not of the soup or cheese courses. Don't
ask for more, in general.
Do follow the shape of each cheese, when helping yourself
to the cheese course. Don't cut off the point of a triangular
cheese, but slice a thin slice off the side, so everyone will
get a good part.
Do close the door behind you, after you have used
les toilettes .
Don't bring wine, which heretofore has been taken as a
suggestion that the host's wine selection might not be up
to your standards. However, this is slowly changing, so if
your own country excels in producing a particular wine,
you might bring a bottle as a novelty.
Don't help yourself, unless it is a buffet. The host or hostess
will notice when your plate or glass is empty.
Don't leave when others are still lingering with coffee, but
don't stay when it is clearly time to move on.
