Ethnic Groups
Eighty per cent of the Greater Paris populace is born in
Paris or from other French provinces. Foreign immigrants
(primarily from North African countries) make up about 20
per cent. It is forbidden by law for the official census to ask
questions about ethnicity or religion.
Religion
Some 80 per cent of the populace is nominally Catholic,
although less than 20 per cent is religiously observant.
With five million Muslims in France (about 8 per cent of the
population), Islam is the second most important religion.

Government Structure
The city of Paris is the only city in France that is a single
Department (75). It operates as a municipal entity, with an
elected mayor and council. Each of the city's 20 districts has
its own council with representatives on the Paris city council.
The suburban communes in the Paris region each have their
own municipal governments.
