In-Depth Information
employment from the company. (This does not apply to
first-year students, who must prove that they have sufficient
funds for the first year of studies.) Students at institutions
that do not provide Sécurité Sociale medical care coverage
are not eligible to work.
Students may work for a maximum of 20 hours per
week during the school year and up to 35 hours during the
three-month summer vacation (between June and October).
By law, French employers must pay all employees at least
the legal minimum wage, but many try to bypass this with
foreign students. Sometimes it is possible to work in France
for a year after studies are completed; inquire at your
consulate. All earnings are taxable under the French tax
system. French consulates may have copies of Employment
in France for Students , which explains the details.
Students should apply to MOE/DDTE, the organisation
mentioned above, which will then determine the appropriate
course. Bring all residence and student documents, as well
as a letter from the prospective employer showing your
name and address; the position and wages offered; the
number of hours of work; and the length of the employment.
Students under 18 years of age must have authorisation
from their parents.
Full-time students from American and some non-EU
countries may work in France during vacations through
a Work Abroad Programme approved by the French
government. In the United States, contact Council on
International Educational Exchange (CIEE) at 300 Fore
Street, Portland ME 04101 (US tel: (1-207) 553-4000;
fax (1-207) 553-4229;; website: http://www.ciee.org).
AU PAIR WORK
EU nationals only need a valid passport and not a pre-
arranged position in order to come to France to work as an
au pair . Non-EU nationals, however, must have applied for a
visa de long séjour and obtained a declaration d'engagement
with a French family. The contract must detail the hours,
tasks and remuneration, and the family must declare the au
pair a stagiare aide familiale , which permits health coverage.
