LOOKING FOR A JOB
When applying for a position, do so only in the field of your
education and experience: French employers do not often
hire people with the intention of training them.
Make sure your resumé is translated into French and
attach a passport-size photograph. The cover letter should
be no more than one page and preferably handwritten, not
typed. Graphology is taken seriously and French employers
rely on handwriting to determine a person's character. Large
corporations are sometimes flexible on this, understanding
that foreigners may not have been subjected to the same
stringent handwriting standards as those of French schools
and that foreign handwriting may not be analysed in the
same way as French handwriting. Some companies also
test for aptitude and personality, as well as a foreigner's
fluency in French. An advertisement may ask for an
applicant's prétentions , meaning the salary desired. It is best
to find out the salaries being paid for comparable positions
before responding.
Actually, open positions may not be publicly advertised.
Cooptation (networking) is increasingly important for the
more skilled positions, and piston (personal influence) plays
a part when it can. Cultivating contacts, networking and
knocking on doors may be as effective as any other means
of finding a job. Sometimes a favoured person may be
parachuté (dropped into) into a particular job without going
through the application process.
