Social benefits such as health insurance, unemployment
insurance and retirement benefits, are costly for both
the employer and the employee. Note also that French
employees are entitled to five weeks of holiday per annum,
or two-and-a-half days per month worked. Currently, the
standard work week is 35 hours. As French businesses
are cutting down on labour-intensive procedures to rely
more on labour-saving technology, thus adding to the
high unemployment rate, labour-intensive investments
are especially encouraged.
Women make up just under half of the working
population—subsidised childcare and tax breaks for home
childcare workers help to boost this figure. Since the mid-
1980s, men and women are by law equal in the workplace,
yet women are still paid about one-third less than their male
counterparts, and few women hold top positions.
Union membership has declined over the past decade
and now accounts for about 12 per cent of the workforce.
